What makes Spark spark

_
Our Mission

Limiting the impact of climate change is the core challenge of our generation. With this belief, our team of engineers, scientists, and business builders embarked on a journey to significantly contribute to the sustainable transformation of transportation, chemistry, and industry.

We are optimizers

In order for e-fuels to become commercially viable, we must fine-tune the essential steps of the production process. From rethinking energy availability to improving the individual reaction conditions – we make sure we leave no stone unturned to transform as much renewable power into fuel as possible.

We are collaborators

Spark is one of many companies working to solve e-fuels – and that‘s a good thing. We collaborate with partners in the renewables, hydrogen, fuels and aviation industry as well as academia and government. Our unique technology fast-tracks scale-up of H2-based e-fuel production projects and the overall H2 market.

We are pragmatists

To us, idealism + realism = actual breakthrough innovation. Everything else is just theory. We know that this technology challenge requires massive scales and not everything will be working perfectly from day one. This is why we look for working solutions, planning plant scale-up according to industry experience, and improving our solutions in iterations.

Why we built this company

Our co-founder Arno was working on techno-economics at MIT,

when he identified high electricity costs as the prime limiting factor for e-fuels. If this problem was solved, e-fuels would have the potential to replace conventional airplane fuels at scale.

Arno joined forces with Mathias, an ex-BCG consultant,

who had experience with commercializing green technologies. Together, they developed a concept for E-fuels production that could utilize fluctuating energy supplies.

Julia was a chemistry PhD working at Evonik,

before she joined the team. She joined to translate theory into practice, and is developing the technology for load-flexible, energy-efficient e-fuel synthesis.

Spark was founded

— the company designed to solve load-flexible, affordable e-fuel production.

We're currently..

...developing our next-gen RWGS reaction,

to use less energy for more carbon output.

1
...scaling a load-flexible production system,

that’s fully decentralized, together with a development partner.

2
…pre-developing a demo plant

to optimize and scale production.
